Summary

Let acclaimed Tolkien artist John Howe take you on an unforgettable journey across Middle-earth, from Bag End to Mordor, in this richly illustrated sketchbook fully of previously unseen artwork, anecdotes and meditations on Middle-earth。

Middle-earth has been mapped, Bilbo’s and Frodo’s journeys plotted and measured, but Middle-earth remains a wilderland for all that。 The roads as yet untraveled far outnumber those down which Tolkien had time to wander。

A Middle-Earth Traveller presents a walking tour of Tolkien’s Middle-earth, visiting not only places central to his stories, but also those just over the hill or beyond the horizon。 Events from Tolkien’s books are explored – battles of the different ages that are almost part of legend by the time of The Lord of the Rings; lost kingdoms and ancient myths, as well as those places only hinted at: kingdoms of the far North and lands beyond the seas。

Sketches that have an ‘on-the-spot’ feel to them are interwoven with the artist’s observations gleaned from Tolkien’s books and recollections of his time spent in Middle-earth while working alongside Peter Jackson on the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit film trilogies。 Combining concept work produced for films, existing Middle-earth art and many new paintings and sketches exclusive to this book, A Middle-earth Traveller will take the reader on a unique and unforgettable journey across Tolkien’s magical landscape。

This is a good book for any LOTR fan。 It is mostly pencil drawings with a couple in color。 I particularly enjoyed the artwork from the Silmarillion, since I feel saturated by art of LOTR and the Hobbit。 Each page has a little bit of text。 At first it seemed pointless to me because it was very basic plot descriptions。 It became helpful when he was describing artwork of more obscure parts of Tolkien's world though。 There were a couple of times where I'm pretty sure the description matches the movi This is a good book for any LOTR fan。 It is mostly pencil drawings with a couple in color。 I particularly enjoyed the artwork from the Silmarillion, since I feel saturated by art of LOTR and the Hobbit。 Each page has a little bit of text。 At first it seemed pointless to me because it was very basic plot descriptions。 It became helpful when he was describing artwork of more obscure parts of Tolkien's world though。 There were a couple of times where I'm pretty sure the description matches the movies and not the books。 My only complaint is that at least half of the colored pictures were too dark to appreciate, and some I could barely see anything at all。 。。。more

I realized once again that I am not one to endlessly scrutinize artworks。 So although this is a book of sketches, "travelling" middle-earth in both geography and history, for me it was far more enlightening as a look at the world through John Howe's eyes。 It's interesting to see how Howe orders his thoughts, what he finds worth mentioning and how much of a Tolkien scholar he himself is。 Add to this the heartwarming anecdotes in the Afterword and this is a most perfect book for anyone who carries I realized once again that I am not one to endlessly scrutinize artworks。 So although this is a book of sketches, "travelling" middle-earth in both geography and history, for me it was far more enlightening as a look at the world through John Howe's eyes。 It's interesting to see how Howe orders his thoughts, what he finds worth mentioning and how much of a Tolkien scholar he himself is。 Add to this the heartwarming anecdotes in the Afterword and this is a most perfect book for anyone who carries the books and films in their heart as much as I do。 。。。more

A beautiful book that I would love to own! Contains mostly sketches detailing the world of Middle Earth, including some locations and events from The Silmarillion that made me especially thrilled。

I've been drooling over John Howe's sketches for nearly two decades now。 This compilation/encyclopedia deserves a spot on every coffee table of every Middle Earth wanderer。 I've been drooling over John Howe's sketches for nearly two decades now。 This compilation/encyclopedia deserves a spot on every coffee table of every Middle Earth wanderer。 。。。more

Great art。 Even better better to figure out that John is clearly a scholar not only of Tolkien but of medieval English literature。

Howe's drawings and paintings from his time working on Peter Jackson's LOTR & The Hobbit trilogies make up the pages of this glorious pictorial journey。 Each section includes quotes from Tolkien's books and brief summaries of characters, geography, and Middle Earth legends, history, and mythology。 It is definitely for Tolkien's fans, but I'd think any artist would be impressed by the quality and detail of Howe's creations。 He concludes with a 3-page summary of his six years working with Jackson Howe's drawings and paintings from his time working on Peter Jackson's LOTR & The Hobbit trilogies make up the pages of this glorious pictorial journey。 Each section includes quotes from Tolkien's books and brief summaries of characters, geography, and Middle Earth legends, history, and mythology。 It is definitely for Tolkien's fans, but I'd think any artist would be impressed by the quality and detail of Howe's creations。 He concludes with a 3-page summary of his six years working with Jackson and the production teams, reminding readers what a marvelous, collaborative artistic endeavor these films are。 。。。more

Mh。 Surprisingly, a bit disappointing。 Some of the artwork is absolutely incredible, but some of the sketches just didn’t catch me as much。 Also, in parts questionable font choices and minor inaccuracies in the lore, I think。

While the sketches are beautiful, the book is completely disorganized and has several spelling and grammatical errors。 Was there an editor? They got the “Not all those who wander are lost” quote wrong, I mean come on。 I enjoyed that there were many references and descriptions of middle earth events taking place in the First and Second Ages。

A wonderful artbook of John Howe's work。 I did feel like it was too focused on sketches from the Hobbit movie and would have liked to see other stuff。 There were also a few typos in the book such as mistyping Fingon as Feanor under the entry for Taniquetil, Eorlinga instead of Eorlingas, Two Treesin should be Two Trees。Other than that it's a great book。 A wonderful artbook of John Howe's work。 I did feel like it was too focused on sketches from the Hobbit movie and would have liked to see other stuff。 There were also a few typos in the book such as mistyping Fingon as Feanor under the entry for Taniquetil, Eorlinga instead of Eorlingas, Two Treesin should be Two Trees。Other than that it's a great book。 。。。more
